I have a unique personal experience with washers and dryers, starting with my background working for a large national appliance manufacturer for several years. Not only did I learn a great deal about the physical appliances, but I was involved in the promotional planning for the appliance sales and know that the month of November is almost always the best time of year to purchase appliances. In some cases, you can save well over $1,000 on a washer and dryer pair thanks to the incentives the manufacturers offer.
The best part is, the deals almost always last through the entire month of November, so you don’t have to wait until Black Friday. That means there’s no need for the early morning alarms, as well.

How to choose the best washer and dryer for you
Today’s washers and dryers come with a ton of bells and whistles, which can get pretty overwhelming if you’re unsure what you want. I recently purchased new laundry appliances, so I understand how confusing it can all get. The best approach is to start with the basic information, then if the budget allows, you can choose a washer and dryer with extra features.
- Capacity: Expressed in cubic feet, how much space does the washer and dryer have? The larger it is, the more you can wash at once, but it may become too large for your space.
- Front load versus top load washer: Front load means the door opening is on the front of the unit, while top load means you open the door from the top. I feel like this is a matter of personal preference, but in general, a front load washer seems to clean better than a top load, but top loads don’t have the mold issues you often find with front loads. Dryers only offer front loading.
- Agitator versus impeller washer: Top load washers have either the agitator or impeller mechanism. The agitator is the post that twists back and forth to clean the clothes, while the impeller has a lower profile and produces more of a rubbing motion. An agitator can typically clean tough stains and is more rough on clothing, while an impeller is gentler and uses less water.
- Gas versus electric dryer: Be sure to confirm if your space accommodates a gas or electric dryer. The dryer model you prefer should be available in either type.
- Budget: If you haven’t purchased a laundry pair in a while, you may be in for a sticker shock. Like any appliance, you can find budget picks and luxury options, you simply have to focus on what works best for your budget.
Whichever washer and dryer you choose, make sure you properly measure your space before purchasing. If you have an older home then there might not be enough space to accommodate today’s bigger washers and dryers.
