Updated February 18, 2024

You’ve purchased the down comforter of your dreams, and now all you need is the perfect cover to complete the look and protect your brand new duvet from dust, dog hair, everyday wear and tear, body oils, and yep, skin cells shed at night. While the best duvet covers are certainly stylish, they’re also comfortable, durable and easy to clean so your bedding is always extra fresh. Whether you love the look of luxe, crisp white hotel bedding or want a pop of color and pattern for your room, we’ve rounded up the coolest (literally), most comfortable, highest-rated, well-made duvet covers to help you sleep like a baby.

How to choose the best duvet covers

Finding the right duvet cover is more than just knowing the size of your duvet and narrowing down your color preferences. Ask yourself:

Do I run hot or cold?

We all have our preferred sleep temperatures, and the duvet cover you choose can have an impact on how hot, cool or generally comfortable you feel at night. “When shopping for duvet covers, identifying your preferred material and weave is crucial to finding the right sheet,” says Golub. According to him, some bedding is cooler than others due to factors like the material they're made from, the type of weave, and even the color.

In general, natural, breathable materials are your best bet if you tend to run hot at night. Consider cotton, bamboo, linen and eucalyptus duvet covers for an easy, breezy cooling effect. Don’t forget to check out the weave too. Opt for lightweight percale (a breathable, airy and cooling weave) over sateen if you like to keep it cool between the sheets.

Do I have sensitive skin?

If so, a hypoallergenic duvet cover constructed of natural materials that are breathable and gentle on skin (think organic cotton, silk, bamboo, linen and wool) is the way to go.

How easy is the cover to clean?

This is important. Always check out the care instructions for the particular duvet cover you’re interested in before buying. If you’re a machine wash only kind of person, you’ll want to be sure you can throw your cover in the wash for quick and easy cleans weekly or bi-weekly.

Is the cover easy to put on?

Some duvet covers zip right on and can be great for those who can’t be bothered to fuss with buttons or ties. If you prefer a more refined look and don't want your cover slipping and sliding around, you’ll want to invest in something with corner ties to keep it in place and buttons to close it up.

What’s my overall style?

Your style preferences and the overall decor aesthetic of your home and bedroom will play a role in the cover you choose. Once you know what material and weave you prefer, look for a duvet cover in a solid color or print that will compliment the rest of your room. You can also buy a few duvet covers and switch them out depending on the season or your mood.

Is it comfortable?

Some materials are naturally softer and cozier than others right off the bat so it’s always best to touch and feel the duvet cover in person before purchasing it. You may love the softness of organic cotton and bamboo on your skin or the texture and visual warmth linen offers.

What are duvet covers?

“A duvet cover is a fabric shell that protects a comforter or duvet and is easier to clean, while also offering the opportunity to change the look and feel of your bedding more often,” notes Andrea Erman, Senior Director, Design and Development Housewares at CB2. Essentially, it’s the equivalent of a pillowcase for your duvet insert with the advantage that it can be thrown in the wash for quick cleaning or switched out for a new print, color, or style as often as you like.

How do duvet covers work?

Each duvet cover is unique, but they all slip right on over your duvet insert. “Sometimes they’re secured by ties at the corners to avoid sliding and then closed with buttons or snaps,” explains Erman. Other duvet covers may zip up or have a hidden zipper for folks who don’t want to fuss with buttons.

The difference between a duvet and a comforter

The duvet vs. comforter debate ends here. “A comforter is typically thinner and is one piece, while a duvet is fluffy and two pieces (the duvet and the cover),” explains Erman. “A duvet also allows a bit more flexibility in changing the look and feel of your bedding style, since you're able to swap out the duvet cover more frequently while the comforter is specific to an aesthetic choice.”

Comforters come in a variety of colors, prints, patterns and styles and a duvet is often simply white, since it won’t be seen under the cover. “Duvets are filled with high-quality natural or synthetic materials such as down feathers, down alternatives, polyester or wool,” says Golub. “A comforter typically has less fill, making it slightly flatter and cooler than a duvet.”

How we select the best duvet covers

We used personal experience, combed through tons of user reviews, and spoke with two bedding experts to narrow down what features to look for in the best duvet covers, including breathability, material, weave, aesthetics, and ease of use and cleaning. We also considered price, quality, customer feedback, and comfort, of course. We then broke our list down into different categories, based on specific needs and preferences, and selected the best duvet cover for each according to our criteria.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Are duvet covers worth it?

Absolutely. “Duvet covers are much easier to clean than comforters or duvet inserts,” notes Golub. “They’re thinner, less bulky, and reduce the number of times annually that you’ll need to wash your duvet insert, which is much more similar in style to a comforter. A duvet cover also keeps body oils, skin cells, and more from getting in your duvet.”

Erman is a huge advocate of duvet covers, too. “The ease of shifting the style of your bed is so easy with duvet covers. All you need to do is swap the cover and you can go from a pristine percale that makes your bedroom look like a five-star hotel to a cozy relaxed linen bed that looks like you're vacationing in Tulum on another day,” she says. “It's very simple, and storing duvet covers is so much easier than storing quilts and comforters.”

Why are duvet covers so expensive?

“Duvet covers can be an investment, often dictated by the details and finishing of the covers, but the quality of materials are reflective of the space you're creating,” says Erman.

What is the best duvet cover for cold weather?

“Linen duvet covers are great for those looking for an all-season duvet cover option,” tells Golub. “Linen feels warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.” It’s hypoallergenic, has excellent airflow and moisture-wicking capabilities, plus it gets softer with each and every wash.

Sateen is another great option for those warmer months. “It's a tighter weave than percale, meaning it sleeps warmer,” says Golub. “Sateen duvet covers, as compared to poplin or percale cotton options, provide a smooth, luxe feel that adds slight warmth to your bed setup.”

How do you know a quality duvet?

Erman recommends focusing on the closure details (like the buttons), which are nicer than zippers or snaps for a more refined, elevated look. “Other details, like larger flanges and embroidery, have utilized extra yardage and detailing. Finally, looking at the right thread count and sustainable materials are important for your bedding as it creates the best hand feel for the best sleeping experience and will continue to improve rather than degrade over washings,” she says.

What type of duvet cover is best for hot sleepers?

Percale is an excellent choice for hot sleepers, as it’s light, airy, and allows for ample air flow between threads. High-quality linen and bamboo are great choices too, as both help wick moisture away from your body. (Curious about the difference? Read up on cotton vs. bamboo sheets.) You can’t go wrong with a cooling cotton or lyocell either.
