What you need to know for Black Friday

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday immediately follows Thanksgiving day (in the United States), which always happens on the fourth Thursday of November. This year Black Friday is on November 24th. It’s become the biggest shopping day of the year and there’s no reason to think this year will be any different.

However, before you set your alarm for an early wakeup call, so you can stand in line for a great Black Friday refrigerator deal, I have good news for you. You can get the “Black Friday” pricing for refrigerators throughout the entire month of November. Most appliance manufacturers offer their best pricing for the entire month, not just for one day. While the retailer may have their own promotion, you can get an amazing deal no matter the day during almost the entire month.

What deals should I expect on refrigerators?

Based on my experience, Black Friday is the best time of year to purchase a refrigerator, washer and dryer, or any other appliance. Appliance manufacturers need to move their inventory before the end of the year. That means they need hot promotions with the retailers, so no one is stuck with too many refrigerators. You should notice almost all appliance manufacturers have steep discounts, which means you can end up getting a fantastic deal.

What kind of refrigerator deals did they have last year?

There are always robust deals for refrigerators for Black Friday. Last year we saw heavy discounts with products such as:

  • GE Profile 27.9-Cubic Foot Smart 4-Door French Door Refrigerator in Stainless Steel at The Home Depot for $3,198 (Save $1,001)
  • LG 30-Inch, 22-Cubic Foot French Door Refrigerator with Ice Maker in Stainless Steel at The Home Depot for $1,398 (Save $601)
  • Samsung 35.75-Inch, 28.2-Cubic Foot. 3-Door French Door Refrigerator in Stainless Steel at The Home Depot for $1,498 (Save $701)

These represent a small portion of the deals found last year, but it perfectly illustrates how much you can save by seeking out one of the refrigerators on sale.

How to get a good deal on refrigerator on Black Friday

Almost all appliance manufacturers put out their best Black Friday deals and pricing during the entire month of November, which means you can usually start shopping earlier in the month and get the same price you would on Black Friday. You may find a different price if the retailer (the one selling the appliance) offers an additional discount, but the appliance manufacturers offer the same discounts through all retailers, thanks to laws governing the pricing.

You’ll see discounts with almost every major brand of refrigerator. As you start shopping around and comparing prices, take a look at the pricing of the most popular national brands such as:

  • Frigidaire
  • Amana
  • Bosch
  • Maytag
  • Whirlpool
  • KitchenAid
  • GE
  • Samsung
  • LG
  • And many more

If there’s a particular brand you’re interested in, try starting with the manufacturer’s website. You can research your favorite features and style, then narrow down your choices based on availability in your area.

How to choose the best refrigerator for you

You can get quite specific on features for refrigerators and there are numerous bells and whistles available, from a temperature-controlled door to child safety locks. Before you pick out the fun features, start with the basics to help you choose the best refrigerator.

  • Capacity: Expressed in cubic feet, how much space does the refrigerator have? While you may want as much capacity as possible, it can mean the refrigerator becomes too large for your space.
  • Number of doors: This influences the style of the refrigerator. Two doors can either be side by side, of equal length (called a side-by-side) or a larger door on the bottom with a smaller door on top (called a top-mount) or freezer on bottom, larger refrigerator door on top (bottom freezer). The French Door style features three doors and opens up like real French doors. Some of these come with an extra fourth-drawer, for snacks or additional freezer space.
  • Finish/color: The finish is an important factor because of the size. A stainless steel refrigerator typically costs more because steel is more expensive. However, you can find models with stainless steel on the front only. Other colors include black and white, but there may be other niche colors available. Specialty finishes, including fingerprint-resistant stainless and black stainless, are great options, too. They’re much easier to keep clean.
  • Ice maker: Not all refrigerators come with an ice maker, so make sure this is included if it’s a feature you want. If it does come with one, you can choose an internal (inside the freezer) or external (outside on the door).
  • Counter-depth vs. regular depth: A counter-depth refrigerator lines up flush with your counters, creating a sleek, streamlined look in your kitchen. It also limits the capacity and is often more expensive because it requires a different compressor. You can expect regular depth to jut out a few inches, which can limit a walkway, but can be less expensive.

Whichever refrigerator you choose, make sure you properly measure your space before you add to cart! If you have an older home or awkward space, then it may not accommodate the refrigerator you have your eye on.

Where to find Black Friday deals on refrigerators

You have a variety of options for purchasing a refrigerator. The big box stores, including Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Best Buy are great places to start because they carry floor models, so you can go in and physically look at the refrigerator. If they don’t have the exact one you want then they can help you order it online. Wayfair is another online shopping option, offering a much wider selection and the same Black Friday deals you find at other retailers.

You can also find the same deals at smaller, regional retailers, such as Abt Electronics or AJ Madison, and they can deliver throughout the U.S. You should find the pricing as competitive as the big box store, but they may also have their own in-store promotion going on for further savings.

While you can find some appliances on Amazon, it’s not the best for selection.
