When I was growing up, my parents owned a restaurant and some rental properties. They were both very handy and would take my three brothers and me to the apartments on weekends to help with repairs and assorted home improvement tasks. When I left home, my dad started the tradition of gifting me a tool (or two) each Christmas which he’d purchase during the local hardware store’s Black Friday deals. When is Black Friday?
Black Friday, considered the first “official” shopping day of the holiday season, is the Friday directly following Thanksgiving (in the United States), which always happens on the fourth Thursday of November. This year, 2023, Black Friday is on November 24th.
Many companies and/or brands feature special cost-saving deals on the day itself (starting at 12:01 AM and ending at 12 Midnight), many of which extend into the full weekend, ending at midnight on Sunday (November 26, 2023).
What deals should I expect on tools for Black Friday?
On Black Friday, expect to find deals anywhere from 10% to 70% off regular prices. Many retailers also offer special discounts when you buy multiple tools at a time. You can often find things like a high end screw cordless electric drill and screw gun with a whole slew of accessories for less than a couple hundred dollars.
What kind of tool deals did they have last year?
Last year, there were tool deals where if you bought a power tool lithium battery kit, you could choose one free “bare” tool compatible with said batteries. There were also numerous deals on bundles of hand tools, perfect for the new homeowner or anyone starting out on their own.
How to get a good deal on tools on Black Friday
Set up a Google alert for “Black Friday Tool Deals.” I like to set the notification frequency for once a day which means you’ll get one email in the evening for all the new listings in the previous 24 hour period.
On November 7, 2023, Google launched a new way to sleuth out shopping deals, save products, and track prices. There’s now a dedicated ‘Deals’ page which provides an organized list of promotions from thousands of brands and retailers. To access, simply type ‘shop deals’ into the search bar. For more specific searches, type ‘shop tool deals’ or ‘shop bike deals.’
Sign up for email subscriptions or check the sites regularly at these large retailers (which often offer Black Friday deals throughout the month of November).
How to choose the best tool deals for you?
If you’re like me and already own lots of tools, look for deals on power tool batteries and chargers (which do wear out in time) for those you already own. As far as power tools go, if you stick with one brand, the chargers and battery packs are all interchangeable. You can also never go wrong with a new set of drill bits (especially thin ones which can break), screw heads (which also wear out), or saw blades. Blades and bits are also made from different materials depending on what task they’re best suited for (sawing wood or metal, for instance), so pay attention to the descriptions when purchasing.
If you’re just starting to stock your own tool box, look for deals on hand tool sets and ‘buy one get one free’ sales of power tools.
If you’re planning a specific home project, make a list of any tools that you don’t already own that will make it easier to complete it.
Where to find Black Friday deals on tools
Home Depot offers a variety of Black Friday deals including free tool deals. They particularly have a plethora of Dewalt Black Friday deals, including combo sets with free tools.
Acme Tools often has 24-hour specials where you can “jump start” your Black Friday shopping. Check the site for promotional deals like a free battery with or $25-$100 off on the purchase of a Dewalt jigsaw.
Ace Hardware offers Black Friday deals across a variety of brands, some of which are up to 60% off.
Sears currently has deals between 50% and 65% off on mechanic tool sets.
For starter hand tool sets and deals on lower priced brands, check out Walmart’s Black Friday sale. If you’re a Walmart+ member, you’ll receive early access on select deals beginning November 22nd at 12:00pm EST (three hours before non-members). If you’re going beyond DIY projects, the retailer is also set to announce some great Black Friday electronics deals.
