What you need to know for Black Friday

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday marks the start of the holiday shopping season. It occurs on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is always the fourth Thursday in November. In 2023, the official weekend of Black Friday shopping begins when the clock strikes midnight on November 24 and ends at midnight on November 26. While some retailers may follow this traditional timing. However, many retailers and brands start Black Friday sales early and extend them into December. Also, check out Travel Tuesday sales, another shopping holiday extended from Black Friday.

What deals should I expect on flights?

Depending on the airline, you may be able to find lower seat prices, lower fees, or bundled travel itineraries as part of Black Friday travel deals from carriers who offer vacation packages. Not all airlines offer deals, so it’s worth shopping around.

What kind of travel deals did they have last year?

There were a handful of deals for travelers last year. For example, JetBlue offered 30% off selected domestic flights, American offered 40% off selected international tickets, and CheapOAir gave you $50 off when you booked flights via its website. Delta offered its SkyMiles members exclusive deals last year and is doing the same in 2023, with a $300 offer for a combo of flight and hotel bookings. Some airlines reportedly offered super low fares on one-way tickets.

How to get a good deal on flights on Black Friday

If you’re looking for a good deal on flights, start checking airline carriers' websites in November, if not before, in case deals come out earlier than Black Friday. Then, set your alarm clock on Thanksgiving and go back and check those sites again for surprise steals on tickets. Don’t forget to check the sites again on 11/27, otherwise known this year as  Cyber Monday (another shopping holiday).

Sign up for Google alerts for major airlines, especially JetBlue, which usually offers deals. Travel websites like TripAdvisor and Expedia are also good sources of information about cheap flights.

CheapOAir.com, a travel agency, is a place to save on flights. It reported major airlines such as JetBlue, American Airlines, United, Frontier, Spirit, and Aeromexico will likely offer Black Friday flights in 2023, so it’s worth checking not only this agency’s page, but also with these carriers closer to learn more about potential deals over this holiday shopping weekend.

How to choose the best flight for you

If you can be flexible about your flight dates and destinations, you’ll have more opportunities to score cheap seats. Flexibility is key when searching for flight deals on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or Travel Tuesday, a relatively new shopping day that extends after the original Black Friday.

If you’re a member of a certain airline, like Delta or American Airlines, check for special sales around the holiday season that are targeted specifically to members. Choosing the best flight for you will depend on various factors, such as timing, destination, and ticket cost. Think about how many tickets you need. If you’re traveling solo, you’ll likely have an easier time than booking as a family of four with kids due to the high demand during sales.

If you are searching for Black Friday sales for flying, we recommend checking out and bookmarking these popular travel websites for savings, where deals and steals on flights and/or flights and hotel/resort packages may be cheaper than buying directly from the airlines: CheapOair.com, Expedia, JustFly.com, and SkyScanner.
