We humans have been adorning ourselves from the beginning of time, fashioning jewelry out of pretty much anything we could get our hands on: From beach shells and gemstones to precious metals, wood, bones, and whatever in our worlds inspired us.

Jewelry is an expression of individual style, but also a meaningful gesture—just think of promise rings and engagement rings. And unlike clothing, which usually has a shelf life, jewelry can last for decades or centuries, making it the perfect heirloom to pass on.

So whether you’re in the market for work, weekend, wedding, or permanent jewelry, we rounded up our favorite jewelry brands to fulfill all of your jewelry needs, wants, and whims.

Our top picks for the best jewelry brands

Best jewelry brand for lab-grown diamonds: Jean Jousset

Founded by the great-great-grandson of Louis Cartier, the eponymous line has forged its own path and is now known for its cutting-edge lab-grown diamonds. Using the tagline “One of a kind, never mined,” Dousset uses only the top 1% of lab-grown diamonds to create their custom jewelry and wedding rings. Because lab-grown diamonds are grown in a lab, not the earth, they are more affordable (because they are less rare) and also are “conflict-free” because they are not mined. While Jean Dousset is known for the best engagement rings, which have been worn by Paris Hilton, Maria Menounos, and Amy Adams, his collection is varied, and the Gwen Lab Diamond Drop Earrings ($7,200) and Dousset Monogram Band ($2,800) are both on our wish lists.

Good to know:

  • Shipping: They offer free domestic shipping that is secured and insured
  • Return policy: 14-day return policy refunded to original form of payment
  • Price range: $1100 to $32,200

Best jewelry brand for engagement rings: Frank Darling

Frank Darling kinda had us at hello. They’re straight-talking attitude cuts through the confusion buying diamonds can bring. They personally vet millions of diamonds to bring you the best, both conflict-free and lab-grown diamonds. Then they work with you to create your own custom engagement ring, sending you replicas to your home to try on IRL for fit and feel. I’m tempted to get remarried to try them out! But we’ll leave the fun for you. They have a great variety of rings and prices, like Skinny Deco Eternity ($2450) and The Capellini Pasta Wedding Ring, which we like in rose gold, available for $600.

Good to know:

  • Shipping: Free domestic shipping. Next-day air shipping is included with all engagement ring purchases over $1,000. Purchases under $1,000 ship via 2-day air. Shipping is discreet and insured

What to consider when shopping for jewelry

What features will impact your budget the most?

Craftsmanship, details, and materials will make the biggest dent in your budget. Something that is mass produced will cost much less than an item handcrafted in a studio by an artisan. In addition, intricate details like etching, beading, engraving, and design will up the price because of the time and artistry. And, of course, materials will factor in: Real gemstones versus replicas and gold versus gold plating will all increase the cost of your piece.

Where will you wear this item, and how often?

Cost per use is always a factor. It’s worth investing in real diamond studs if you’ll wear them every day. But while fun statement pieces will turn looks, you may not get as much wear out of them. You can expect to spend on special events or once-in-a-lifetime pieces, like a quinceanera or wedding, where the jewelry will be a meaningful part of the occasion. But for everyday wear, you can supplement investment pieces (like a luxury watch) with of-the-moment items that are easier on the wallet—and can help extend the shelf-life of your pricier pieces.

Is this for you or someone else?

Good question! Jewelry is a beautiful but hard gift to give, so be sure to be familiar with the recipient's style—and always check the return policy.
