As someone in the midst of middle-age, there are days where it feels impossible to achieve a great night’s sleep. With the weight of my to-do list squarely on my shoulders, a few (or more) extra pounds I’m carrying around, and sharing a mattress with both a partner and a furbaby, it’s a tall order for any mattress to support me on a nightly basis. I deal with small aches and pains each day too, so can a mattress offer any type of relief?

We’re all inundated with promises from mattresses, from back or neck pain relief, to the most restful night’s sleep we could imagine. However, my mattress experience before being asked to review the Saatva Classic left me disheartened. I was sleeping on a popular memory foam bed-in-a-box mattress that I only had for four years. Recently, I started experiencing hip and shoulder pain after a full night’s sleep and was starting to feel my mattress was the culprit. I’ve been tossing and turning more frequently and can never get quite comfortable.

It was a perfect time for reviewing a mattress and I was asked to sleep on the Saatva Classic hybrid for several weeks before this review. For testing purposes, I reviewed the 14.5 inch height and Luxury Firm option. Read on for my review of the Saatva Classic and if it’s the mattress this middle-age sleep cynic has been searching for.

Saatva Classic Mattress pros and cons

Pros

The Saatva Classic has several positive features, starting with its white glove delivery service handled by a third-party company. They remove your old mattress (if requested) and set up the new one (plus discard all packaging) so you can enjoy your mattress right away.

The mattress features luxuriously soft, breathable organic cotton for its top layer, making it incredibly comfortable as soon as you lie down. The top layer feels supportive and doesn’t sink in, making it a supportive option for side and stomach sleepers.

The Saatva Classic is made with better materials, from the organic cotton, to the botanical antimicrobial treatment and a plant-based fire-retardant barrier.

Cons

The Saatva Classic does have a higher price tag compared to other hybrid models, which may put it out of reach for some families. However, the quality and durability of the materials, plus the lifetime warranty and long trial period, add more value compared to what other mattress companies offer.

While the organic cotton top layer is made for breathability, I personally wouldn’t consider it a cooling mattress. If you’re an especially hot sleeper, you may prefer a mattress with even more cooling properties.

You may also experience a longer shipping and delivery time compared to other quick-ship options. Each Saatva mattress is made-to-order, which takes from one to three weeks, plus the added delivery time using a third-party delivery service.

Saatva Classic Mattress price

As mentioned, the Saatva Classic does have a somewhat higher cost compared to other options and here is a sample of the current pricing for the mattress only.

  • Saatva Classic Twin: $1,395
  • Saatva Classic Twin XL: $1,495
  • Saatva Classic Full: $1,995
  • Saatva Classic Queen: $2,095
  • Saatva Classic King: $2,595
  • Saatva Classic Split King: $2,990
  • Saatva Classic California King: $2,595
  • Saatva Classic Split California King: $2,990

It’s worth noting you can choose between two mattress heights (11.5 inches and 14.5 inches) and three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm). The price remains the same no matter what combination you select.

Saatva Classic Mattress

Saatva Classic Mattress design

The Saatva Classic design is worth highlighting. It starts with a 3-inch pillow-top contouring layer, which has some give, but doesn’t envelop me either. It’s made with organic cotton, which promotes breathability and is so soft to the touch. This layer also features a plant-based fire-retardant treatment (most mattresses use a chemical treatment) and has a natural antimicrobial treatment too.

Two other design features also stand out. It’s built with individually wrapped pocketed coils that are more numerous compared to other mattresses. This provides more support and it keeps the squeaking to a minimum so there’s less disturbance with movement.

Another design feature is the high-density foam rails, which offer more edge support. It feels just as sturdy on the sides as it does in the center of the mattress.

Saatva Classic Mattress support and comfort

Of all the features, to me the Saatva Classic shines the most with its comfort and support. I opted for the Luxury Firm level, since I’m a side sleeper and don’t fall into the lightweight category. Someone who weighs much less may prefer the Plush Soft level. Mattresses for side sleepers can be difficult to suss out, as are mattresses for back pain. Additionally, I regularly experienced hip and shoulder pain on the side I slept on with my old memory foam mattress, which I now know lacked the support I needed.

I slept well the first night with the Saatva Classic, and I noticed in the morning I didn’t have nearly as much shoulder or hip pain. While not completely gone, it was noticeably lessened. Now after several weeks of sleeping on the Saatva Classic, my shoulder pain is completely gone and I have yet to notice any hip pain upon waking. The mattress features the Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire, which keeps the spine aligned while sleeping and is likely contributing to the overall support.

I do share a bed with my partner and dog (who weighs 15 pounds) and was concerned about feeling too much movement. While I do feel slightly more movement compared to my old memory foam, it’s not much. There’s no sinking feeling in the center, or any obnoxious squeaking coils. This is thanks to its pocketed recycled-steel coils, designed for responding to my body’s movements and reducing motion transfer.

Mattress support and comfort

Saatva Classic Mattress performance

I’ve now enjoyed several weeks of sleeping on the Saatva Classic, with some nights feeling bone tired and other nights where I was a little more restless. No matter what sleep mood I’ve been in, the mattress has provided incredible rest, comfort, and support for me and my partner.

Until recently, I believed a memory foam mattress would be most comfortable and cozy for me, but I’ve changed my opinion. I realized I need more support based on my weight and sleeping patterns. The Saatva Classic offers a combination of much-needed support, but with the plushness level I prefer.

Saatva Classic Mattress delivery and setup

Saatva uses a white glove delivery which includes setup in your home. They bring the mattress into your room, plus haul away your old mattress and foundation (if requested). Delivery is handled by a third-party company.

My personal delivery experience started off a little rocky, when the contracted delivery company failed to show up at the scheduled date and time. Once we worked through the issue and found another delivery date, I was able to experience what white glove delivery looks like.

With the second delivery date, the team showed up exactly when promised. The mattress arrived on the truck completely wrapped in plastic. But first, the delivery team hauled away my old mattress for me. Once those were removed, the team brought in the new mattress, unwrapped it for me, and placed it on my foundation. I had the opportunity to inspect it and the team members took away all of the packaging. The entire haul away and setup took around 15 minutes and could not have been simpler.

Before I put my bed sheets on, I couldn’t help but notice how incredibly soft the plush top layer of organic cotton is. It didn’t have the weird chemical smell you might expect from a brand new mattress and that I’ve experienced in the past. It simply smelled fresh and I was able to enjoy it later the same evening.

Is Saatva Classic Mattress for you? Who is this mattress best for?

My biggest concerns with the Saatva Classic were that I would feel too hot when sleeping, I would be disturbed when one of us shifted, and I would hear squeaking with any movement. I was also looking for relief from the shoulder and hip pain I was starting to experience with my old memory foam mattress.

The Saatva Classic exceeded my expectations with all of these points. If you’re a side sleeper like me who needs greater support and alignment, I highly recommend the Saatva Classic, whether you opt for a king mattress, a queen mattress, or any of the other size options

What sets the Saatva Classic Mattress apart from other mattresses?

The Saatva Classic delivers a higher level of support with its numerous pocketed coils. It also uses more eco-friendly materials compared to many of the hybrid options available, such as the plant-based fire-retardant barrier and recycled steel coils. Its plush top layer feels similar to a memory foam mattress, yet includes the support of the innersprings.

How does Saatva compare to other mattresses?

Saatva versus Tempur-Pedic

The Tempur-Pedic models focus on the brand’s exclusive material, which can address numerous sleep concerns, including cooling and pressure relief. It offers four models to choose from, based on your needs. (Check out Time Stamped Shopping’s reviews of the Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt, Tempur-Pedic Luxe Adapt, and Tempur-Pedic Adapt mattresses for an in-depth look at each.) Like Saatva, Tempur-Pedic models rely on door delivery and you can get complete setup and haul away if needed. Tempur-Pedic has a wide range of price points like the Saatva options, ranging from $1,999 to $10,000, but does not focus on using eco-friendly materials like Saatva.

Saatva versus WinkBed

The Saatva Classic and WinkBed mattress both offer luxury innerspring designs with high-quality materials, but cater to those with slightly different preferences. Saatva Classic uses the pocketed coil construction with three firmness options (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm), while focusing on eco-friendly materials and edge-to-edge support.

WinkBeds also offer multiple firmness levels, including a softer model and a Plus version designed for heavier individuals. WinkBeds feature a pillow top and zoned support for targeted pressure relief. It’s also delivered via a bed-in-a-box and while quicker, it doesn’t include the white glove delivery service Saatva provides. For more, check out this review of the WinkBed mattress.

Saatva versus Helix

Like Saatva, Helix offers a wide selection of mattress types, including foam and hybrid models, and mattresses tailored for children. Each Helix mattress model focuses on providing comfort, support, and specific sleep issues (such as cooling or tailored for couples) and offers several firmness options so you can purchase something more customized. Like WinkBed, it comes delivered in a box and you’ll have to handle setup yourself.

Other mattresses from Saatva

Saatva offers a full lineup of luxury mattress options, including a memory foam hybrid, a cooling latex hybrid, an option for heavier individuals, children, and those with chronic back or joint pain.

It also has an adjustable firmness model that is ideal for couples, where you can have split firmness levels so you each get exactly what you need.

Saatva Classic Mattress frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is Saatva good for back pain?

If you suffer from back pain, you may find the support offered by Saatva mattresses can help alleviate it. The innerspring coils offer more support versus memory foam alone, plus it features greater support in the middle (where your back needs it) and helps keep the spine aligned when sleeping. From my experience, I found the Saatva Classic helped reduce my hip pain overall, which I experienced from being a side sleeper with my old memory foam mattress.

Does the Saatva Classic need a boxspring?

The Saatva Classic Mattress can work with or without a boxspring. If you have a platform bed, the mattress can be used on its own and without additional support. If you don’t have a platform bed, then Saatva recommends using a foundation or a boxspring for proper support. You may also prefer its adjustable base model, which supports the Saatva Classic.

How long does a Saatva Classic Mattress last?

The company says its Saatva Classic is built to last 10 to 15 years with normal use. It also includes an industry-leading lifetime warranty for its mattresses.

Is the Saatva Classic good for stomach sleepers?

Stomach sleepers need more support and the Saatva Classic can be a great fit. Saatva offers three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Saatva recommends either the Luxury Firm or Firm level for stomach sleepers.

Final verdict

I’m thrilled with the Saatva Classic. I no longer have any of the aches and pains in my hips and shoulder when I wake up, and I‘m getting a restful night’s sleep almost every single night. I was concerned about feeling my partner’s movement and hearing squeaks from the innersprings whenever there was movement, but neither of these occurred. I recommend this luxury innerspring option for anyone looking for support and relief from pains you feel upon waking, but who still crave coziness and softness from their mattress.
