Presidents Day is a time-honored tradition of celebrating the birthdays of George Washington and President Lincoln. Its roots began in the late 1800s as a federal holiday to recognize our nation’s founding father’s birthday. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law was passed, and the observance of Lincoln’s birthday (which had been previously celebrated in his home state of Illinois on his birthday, Feb. 12) and Washington’s birthday (Feb. 22) became one of the nation’s federal holiday-driven three-day weekends.
Like many other three-day weekends, stores offer big sales to entice shoppers to use their time off to find deals on big-ticket items like mattresses, furniture, and household appliances. Presidents Day is also a good time to stock up on clothing and accessories, especially winter items, when stores are trying to clear inventory for spring and summer.
However, the sales aren’t just in-store. Since promotions are often the same online as they are at brick-and-mortar (and online-only retailers also observe the shopping holiday), you don’t even have to brave the potentially cold and dreary February weather to buy new wares or a new wardrobe.

February 19, 2024. Presidents Day always falls on the third Monday in February.
When do Presidents Day sales start?
Pre-sales begin towards the end of January but expect most sales to start in the first week or so in February. The three-day weekend is the best time to pick up the biggest deals online and in stores.
What deals can you expect at Presidents Day sales?
You can find deals on bedding, mattresses, household appliances, clothing and accessories. In addition, expect markdowns on winter inventory that stores are trying to offload before restocking shelves for spring and summer. Presidents Day is known for its sales on home items, like appliances (large and small) and home furnishing (it’s a great time to get a jump on your outdoor spaces for spring), but you can find a bevy of markdowns for every budget in most shopping categories.
