Baby showers are a time to celebrate a new arrival and the parent- or parents-to-be with gifts that are practical, whimsical, or both. These celebratory gatherings when we anticipate a (big) change in a loved one’s life are full of excitement and, probably if it’s your first child, a dash of anxiety.

While there is some historical evidence that baby showers (or a form of them anyway) occurred in ancient times all over the world, in the U.S., baby showers became popular after World War II. Today, they continue to be a custom for new parents, whose family and friends come together to provide support, love, and gifts to new parents.

On a practical note, baby showers can provide necessities after the baby is born. When I had my baby shower, I loved the beautiful heirloom quilt I received, but the case of newborn diapers and breast pump were indispensable on the day we brought our baby home.

Lovevery Black & White Card Set

Lovevery Black & White Card Set

Did you know black and white toys and books can help strengthen a baby’s eyes? Angel Dear Blue Elephant Blankie

Angel Dear Blue Elephant Blankie

Angel Dear Blue Elephant Blankie

The Angel Dear brand produces (in my opinion) one of the softest and sweetest baby snuggle blankets for babies and toddlers on the market. We received one of these at our first baby shower, and it is still a beloved item. There are no buttons, snaps, or anything a baby could choke or get caught on. These blankies, also called loveies, are machine washable and don’t wear and tear over time. I can’t recommend them enough, and if blue elephants are not your thing, Angel Dear makes rabbits, puppies, hippos, and other animals. The unicorn designs are also cute! Pro tip: If your baby loves this as much as mine did, buy a few in case one goes missing. You won’t regret it.

  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $15

Manhattan Toy Skwish Infant Rattle

Manhattan Toy Skwish Infant Rattle

We had a version of this highly rated and award-winning colorful toy that remained in rotation for a long time in your household. This Manhattan Toy Company hit is both a teether and a rattle. Lightweight and easy to hold, it has an infant-pleasing multisensory geometric design. It allows babies (although probably not newborns) to shake, flatten, and swish it and then watch it “bounce back” to its original shape. It is made from renewable rubberwood with a non-toxic, water-base finish. It’s been a favorite of babies and parents for over 30 years!

Specifications

  • Material: Elastic and sustainable wood with water-based, non-toxic paint
  • Care instructions: Wipe down with a damp soapy cloth and then rinse by running a cloth over to remove any soap residue
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $23.99

Pros:

  • Colorful
  • Non-toxic

Cons:

  • May be too big for a newborn, but just give it a few months

The bottom line:

An affordable, creative, and multisensory toy that will likely be enjoyed for a couple of years.

Baby Einstein 4-in-1 Kickin' Tunes Music and Language Play Gym and Piano Tummy Time Activity Mat

Baby Einstein 4-in-1 Kickin' Tunes Music and Language Play Gym and Piano Tummy Time Activity Mat

Tummy time is a phrase you will know if you were a babysitter, have a young sibling, or are a new parent. Babies use tummy time to strengthen their little neck muscles and get a chance to lie belly down, something absolutely not recommended for sleeping until age one. There are various play and activity mats designed to entertain both you and your baby while you practice tummy time. It contains 10 toys and activities and is recommended by parents for its music-forward focus, but if your baby doesn't like the sounds, Baby Einstein sells other themed mats online.

Specifications

  • Material: Various materials
  • Care instructions: Spray with mild disinfectant and wipe down and remove it carefully; can also use wipes to clean
  • Batteries required (Y/N): Yes
  • Price on publish: $41.99

Pros:

  • 10 toys and activities
  • Comfortable playmat

Cons:

  • If you don’t like the music (most babies enjoy it) this toy could get old fast (for the parents)

The bottom line:

A fun, music-filled tummy time mat with over 10 activities to keep babies stimulated and entertained.

Jellycat Jungly Tails Soft Cloth Baby Book

Jellycat Jungly Tails Soft Cloth Baby Book

Jellycat Jungly Tails Soft Cloth Baby Book

This cloth baby book may have a cute storyline but buy it for the fun fabric tails that stick out of its slim volume, which is the perfect size for carrying around. It’s crinkley (many babies love crinkle noises) and has colorful tails of different shapes, sizes, and textures that make “reading” fun. It clips easily to a stroller, which I personally felt is one of its best features. This fun toy is made for on-the-go entertainment.

Specifications

  • Material: Polyester/cotton
  • Care instructions: Spot clean
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $18.50

Pros:

  • Clips onto stroller and car seat
  • Easy for little hands to grasp

Cons:

  • Expensive for a cloth book

The bottom line:

This cute, portable cloth book contains animal tails with textures, colors, and even crinkle noises that little hands love to explore.

Sophie La Giraffe

This adorable teething toy was one of my older son’s favorite things well into the toddler years. It’s somehow the perfect size for babies’ small hands and magically soft and flexible, yet firm enough for tiny gums to gnaw on. Sophie is made from 100% natural rubber from the latex of the Hevea tree and is traditionally and manually produced by the French company, Vulli. They’ve been producing the beloved French teething toy for over 55 years. It’s one of my personal go-to gifts for new babies. This gift set also comes with an adorable Sophie teething ring made from the same seemingly indestructible, all-natural (and safe) rubber.

Specifications

  • Material: 100% natural rubber
  • Care instructions: Wash by hand is best
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $47

Pros:

  • All-natural and safe to chew
  • Babies seem to love it
  • Easy to clean

Cons:

  • It is more expensive than some chew toys

The bottom line:

Sophie La Giraffe is the perfect gift—functional and fun for babies (and her popularity for over 55 years proves it).

The best gear baby shower gifts

Cloud B Twilight Turtle Classic

Cloud B Twilight Turtle Classic

Cloud B Twilight Turtle Classic

This remains my favorite piece of baby gear I received at my shower. Sure, a stroller and car seat are absolute necessities when you have a newborn, but this turtle-shaped night light is sure to soothe a parent along with their baby in the dark. The twilight turtle projects a starry night sky complete with eight major constellations onto your walls and ceiling. There are three soft color options (blue, amber, and green) and an automatic rotation, but personally, I found it distracting.

The gentle light and night-sky effect have a mesmerizing quality and produce just enough light for you to see to tip-toe out of a sleeping baby’s room, and it comes with a timer you can set so you know it will go off. I may have missed it the most when my kids grew out of it. This constellation maker contains long-life LEDs that will not heat up. Our turtle lasted several months without needing new batteries, but keep those AAA ones on hand; this turtle needs three of them to work.

Specifications

  • Material: Polyester
  • Care instructions: Spot clean the turtle shell very carefully
  • Batteries required (Y/N): Yes
  • Price on publish: $39.99

Pros:

  • Soft (not too bright) light with color choices
  • Displays real constellation patterns
  • Soothing for everyone
  • Has a timer

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a noise component which some parents (not me) wanted

The bottom line:

A sweet turtle shaped night light that projects a starry sky on walls and ceiling with eight constellation designs and provides soft (not-too-bright) colors (green, blue and amber) that you can set on a timer.

Huhu Everyday Diaper Backpack 2.0

Huhu Everyday Diaper Backpack 2.0

Huhu Everyday Diaper Backpack 2.0

There are so many diaper backpacks on the market that it was hard to pick the “best” one. My diaper bag was not this fashionable, but I would have chosen the Everyday Diaper Backpack if given the chance. It has 10 pockets, and I always need space for a binky or a package of wipes. This extremely functional bag contains easy to use small compartments, removable pouches, and wide cushioned backstraps. It comes with several clear storage pouches so you don’t have to root around for what you need. It's roomy enough to toss in diapers, bottles, blankets, and more. Plus, outside pockets can be used for parents' items, like keys and a phone. One downside: The bag doesn’t sit upright, so if you need a bag that does, skip this one.

Specifications

  • Material: 100% water-resistant recycled PFAS-free polyester
  • Care instructions: Spot clean
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $195

Pros:

  • Loads of interior and exterior pockets
  • Sleek yet roomy design
  • Extremely comfortable to wear with padded straps
  • Removable clear pouches

The bottom line:

If you want a functional, but fashionable diaper backpack with loads of pockets and removable pouches, this is a great choice.

Pottery Barn Kids Vinyl Changing Table Pad

Pottery Barn Kids Vinyl Changing Table Pad

Pottery Barn Kids Vinyl Changing Table Pad

New parents may be nervous when they are first learning to change tiny diapers. A changing table pad—soft enough to lay your baby down, with softly curved sides and a middle strap to keep them from falling out—is a great functional gift that can be used anywhere when you need to give your baby a fresh diaper.

Specifications

  • Material: Vinyl
  • Care instructions: Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; wipe dry
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $59

Pros:

  • Soft
  • Lightweight
  • Gentle curved sides for safety
  • Can be used anywhere not just on a changing table

Cons:

The bottom line:

Soft and sturdy changing pad that is portable and has a design to keep baby safe.

Munchkin UV Diaper Pail

Munchkin UV Diaper Pail

Munchkin UV Diaper Pail

A diaper pail may not seem like a sentimental gift, but it will be a welcome one. According to a recent survey from Everyday Health Group Pregnancy & Parenting Registry Builder Insights (Jan-Jun 2023), 83% of parents say diapers are a “must-have” registry item, but only 43% have added a diaper pail to their registry. If you can afford it, a diaper pail is one of those indispensable gifts for new parents.

Babies generate a lot of waste, and you won’t want to throw it away in an open pail. Diaper pails have come a long way since I had my first son, but this one comes highly recommended by several parents. It is also a good choice for germaphobes, as it is designed with not only odor control but its self-sealing and cleaning system and UV light sterilization kills germs like Staph, E. coli, and Klebsiella. It comes with a diaper pail, USB cable, adapter (for the UV light system), and a reusable Snap, Seal & Toss bag. Downside: You have to purchase bag refills that come in a pack of 20.

Specifications

  • Material: N/A - various
  • Care instructions: N/A (Remove and change bag)
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $129.99

Pros:

  • Company claims it kills up to 99% of germs
  • Sterilization via UV light
  • Self-sealing odor control

Cons:

  • Cost of refill Snap, Seal & Toss bags can add up

The bottom line:

The best diaper pail if you want a nearly odor-free, germ killing trash can and don’t mind the revolving purchases of diaper bags.

Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail

Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail

Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail

If the price tag on the option above is a little too high for a gift, this one (also from Munchkin) is a great and affordable alternative. It uses odor control with a simple foot pedal and has a patented self-sealing system that keeps odors contained whether the lid is open or closed. And when you gift this diaper pail, it is the gift that keeps on giving: for every single diaper pail sold, Munchkin will plant a tree!

Specifications

  • Material: N/A
  • Care instructions: Clean with a wet cloth
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $59.99

Pros:

  • Self-sealing odor free system
  • Easy to use

Cons:

  • Cost of refill bags can add up

The bottom line:

An affordable diaper pail with odor control and an easy-to-use foot pedal to keep your hands where they belong—on your baby.

BabyBjörn Bouncer

BabyBjörn built its reputation on wearable baby carriers, but it also designs excellent bouncers that keep babies upright (no more acid reflux) and safe in their tiny seats. This Bouncer Balance Soft seat has a safety harness, soft padding, and straps which are easy for the baby to hold. It’s ergonomically designed for newborns and babies up to 29 lbs and allows them to safely sit and rock with support given to their heads, necks, and back. Ergobaby All Carry Positions Breathable Mesh Baby Carrier

Ergobaby All Carry Positions Breathable Mesh Baby Carrier

Ergobaby All Carry Positions Breathable Mesh Baby Carrier

Are you team Ergobaby or BabyBjörn? Personally I was Ergobaby all the way, while my husband preferred the also excellent second choice. Parents highly recommend both companies. I love that you can switch this carrier to a back or side position besides a front carrier. The breathable mesh also meant neither of us got too overheated as we strolled around the neighborhood streets, and it makes a great travel carrier because of how soft and easy it is to fold up. Pockets are always essential, and it can be hard to reach the ones in your pants when you are carrying a baby. This carrier has easily accessible side pockets, an attachable pouch for stray items, and a hood in case it gets too hot outside for the top of your baby’s head.

Pro tip: The best baby carrier for you might not work for someone else. I recommend you always buy the carrier on the gift registry, but don’t be afraid to recommend another one to a new parent.

Specifications

  • Material: Polyester and SoftFlex Mesh
  • Care instructions: Machine washable
  • Batteries required (Y/N): No
  • Price on publish: $171.45 - $199

Pros:

  • Wide padded straps
  • Newborn ready

Aden + Anais Boutique Cotton Muslin Swaddles

Aden + Anais Boutique Cotton Muslin Swaddles

A four-pack of these beautiful muslin swaddle blankets may not be enough if you love them as much as most parents. These large soft clothes may be advertised as swaddles, but they can be used in many ways, from baby blankets, light stroller covers, soothing blankies (as we called them), floor covers, and anything else. You can also swaddle your baby in them, but that takes practice. Mainly, my family loved them because they grew softer after every wash, were made from breathable cotton muslin, and had gorgeous prints and patterns. They also hold up surprisingly well. I have three of them in our linen closet, over 14 years old. Buy these in bulk if you can afford to. Yes, they are that perfect.

What to consider when buying baby shower gifts

Some parents create a wish list registry for their baby shower, and others (myself included) like to be surprised, but no matter what, there are a few things to consider when shopping for a new baby (and their parent/parents). Also, keep in mind that babies grow fast. If you find a special toy for 6 to 12 months, a beloved book (our go-to is the Goodnight Moon Board Book), or an outfit appropriate for the seasons ahead, don’t worry too much about it not being right for a newborn.

Is this their first child?

New parents may lack certain tools and toys for their first child, like what you consider to be the best diaper bag, swaddle clothes, and nursing-related gear. If parents decide to have a baby shower (and there is no rule you can only have one) for a second, third, or fourth child, the less-is-more rule for gifts may apply, as they likely have hand-me-down items and/or know what to purchase for themselves. Items like a bulk package of diapers, new burp clothes, baby bibs, or a simple toy might be the way to go.

Pro tip: If you can afford to, bring a small gift for the siblings too. When my second child was born, my friends and family wrapped and dropped off small packages of toddler toys and chocolate for our soon-to-be three-year-old, who felt (understandably) dubious about our wee addition to the household. To get some ideas, read our guides on toys for one-year-olds and toys for two-year-olds.

How much can I afford to spend?

Baby gifts, like more advanced baby monitors, can be surprisingly expensive for such small items. Pick a budget for your shower shopping and stick to it. If you hunt around, you can likely find something at your price point. If you don’t have spare cash to spend, making something like a knitted blanket or tiny hat can be extremely meaningful. A homemade coupon book filled with the gift of time containing offers to “make dinner” or “babysit” will definitely not go unused by new parents.

What was my favorite baby gift?

If you have kids, think about the best gifts you received at your shower. Maybe you couldn’t live without a certain type of diaper rash cream or loved a specific kind of baby carrier. Your experience can be valuable to new parents. Two of the best gifts I received were a toy called Sophie the Giraffe and a small plush snuggle blanket shaped like a small light blue elephant. We give them on repeat around here when there is a new baby.

How we selected the best baby shower gifts

I hand-picked baby toys and other items that I personally used with my children or have given as gifts to new parents. In addition, I consulted hundreds of reviews from parents, talked to friends and colleagues about their gift recommendations, and researched and took suggestions based on pediatric developmental milestones, like “tummy time” from organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I didn’t include strollers and car seats on my list on purpose because safety, fit, and comfort for these high-ticket items are often best chosen by the parents-to-be. If you find them on a friend or family’s registry, by all means, purchase them. If you really want to buy a car seat or travel stroller, make sure to ask the parents what kind they want, as there are many excellent choices on the market.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Should baby gifts be gender-specific?

Personally, I don’t think baby gifts should be considered by gender. While some parents love the outdated tradition of pink for girls and blue for boys, in this day and age throw those cliches out the window. Purchase what you love or what you think a parent or baby will love, no matter what.

Can men attend baby showers?

Yes. Co-ed baby showers are all the rage these days.

Are baby shower gifts for moms or babies?

Typically people give gifts to new parents to show their love and give gifts of support for the new baby, from diapers to family heirlooms. There isn’t one way to give a gift to a new parent. When I had my second baby, a group of friends not only brought useful gifts for my child, but they presented me with a gift certificate to a local clothing store for when I wanted to wear something other than maternity clothes. It may be a nice idea to choose something practical from a baby shower registry and then present the mom or dad with a token gift just for them.
