Travelers are back in the skies and on the roads, airplanes are taking off full, and there is likely a good chance you’re planning to travel this year or thinking about it. Whether you’re heading off on a much-deserved vacation or just getting away for a weekend, you may be looking to earn rewards on your travel spending.

But most travel credit cards come with an annual fee. That might make sense for road-warrior business travelers who are on a first-name basis with the airport check-in agent, but what if you don’t travel as often? If you’re an occasional traveler, paying an annual fee might not make sense.

In this article, we’ll cover the best travel credit cards with no annual fee.

Our recommendations

If you’re invested in the Citi ThankYou Points ecosystem, the card is a must-have, not for its travel benefits, but for its point bonus on redemptions. The card offers a 10% rebate on point redemptions when you redeem your ThankYou Points. If you hold multiple ThankYou Point-earning cards and combine your ThankYou Points accounts, you get this rebate on any redemption, up to 100,000 points redeemed per year.

Here are the details of the Citi Rewards+® Card:

Our methodology

To find the best travel credit cards with no annual fee, we looked at the offerings from banks, U.S.-based airlines, and the major hotel chains. To be included in our list, cash back cards had to earn greater than 2% cash rewards on travel. Co-branded hotel and airline cards needed to earn at least two points per dollar on purchases with the brand. In most cases, we found that holding the no-annual-fee card that aligns with your travel brand preferences will earn you the most miles and points.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is a solid flat-rate earnings card with annual_fee_disclaimer annual fee. Although the 1.5% cash back doesn’t seem impressive at first glance, it becomes more valuable when combined with other rewards cards from Chase that can be redeemed for a far greater value.

This card is recommended for everyday use, whether for doctor copays or big box store purchases. It can be a large earner for cardmembers who want to get the most out of their everyday spending.

My go-to no-annual-fee credit card to quickly earn travel rewards is the card_name. While not strictly a "travel" credit card, it earns some of the most valuable travel points in existence: Chase Ultimate Rewards® — and at a faster rate than many premium travel rewards cards. The one caveat is that you’ll need to also hold an annual fee-incurring Ultimate Rewards card to unlock the full potential of your points. If you’re not ready to take that leap, you can happily accrue Chase points for no annual fee and have a mountain of rewards for whenever you decide to open a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

While the Chase Freedom Flex℠ isn't a travel credit card per se, I use it to earn rewards that are ultimately used for travel. That part is easy since Chase lets users pool all their rewards in a Chase travel credit card for premium travel redemptions. I always move my Freedom rewards to our family's Chase Sapphire Reserve® account before I redeem. I love using the Chase Freedom Flex℠ to earn bonus rewards in its 5% back categories, at least up to the $1,500 quarterly bonus spending limit. These categories are frequently ones I can use, so they're easy to maximize. For example, the card's upcoming bonus category for Q3 of 2024 includes gas, EV-charging stations, select live entertainment (including concert tickets), and movie tickets.

Kevin Payne: Choice Privileges® Mastercard®

The Choice Privileges® Mastercard® has been a nice surprise for our family. It's not the flashiest travel rewards card, and most of our trips don't include stays at Choice properties. But it fills a specific need. Our road trips to the East Coast for beach vacations involve long car rides and often include a halfway-point hotel pit stop. Many Choice Hotels offer rooms with two beds and a sleeper sofa, which work well for our family of six. We're just there to sleep and grab a free breakfast before finishing our trek, so we don't need fancier accommodations. Redemptions for reward nights are relatively low, so the card's sign-up bonus goes a long way. We've also used it to book free stays for our kids' out-of-town sports tournaments. We don't stay at Choice properties enough to warrant getting the higher tier Choice Privileges® Select Mastercard®, which has a $95 annual fee, but the no-fee version works perfectly for us.

TIME Stamp: Brand loyalty can be rewarding

If you are a Costco member, the card_name offers the best travel rewards across a variety of travel purchases. If you’re not a Costco member and want a travel credit card that offers the best rewards with no annual fee, go with the entry-level card of your most used travel brand.
