February is the birth month of the nation’s first president, George Washington, and President Abraham Lincoln, who led the country during the Civil War. Today, we celebrate these leaders together during a three-day weekend (always on the third Monday in February) due to a 1971 law, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law, passed in 1971. The three-day week on the federal calendar may have been designed to give federal workers and others a break, but it provided an opportunity for stores to encourage people to use their time off to shop big sales after the holiday season.
