As far as ingredients to avoid when shopping for teeth whitening kits go, Dr. Liu advises avoiding phthalimido-peroxy-caproic acid (PAP) and instead opting for products containing PAP+. Furthermore, Dr. Becker notes charcoal is not an ingredient that should be applied to teeth for whitening purposes as it can erode enamel and weaken teeth. A best practice is to avoid products containing triethanolamine, sodium chloride, and urea peroxide, adds Dr. Hoang.
