Alongside perennial concerns like “work” and “money,” sociocultural issues including [mass shootings](https://time.com/5643553/2019-mass-shootings-list/), access to [health care](https://time.com/5709017/medicare-for-all-doctor-activists/) and the [2020 presidential election](https://time.com/5718279/andrew-yang-primary-support/) now cause the most stress for American citizens, according to the annual “Stress in America” survey from the American Psychological Association (APA).

The survey was conducted between Aug. 1 and Sept. 3 and polled 3,617 adults across the U.S., according to an APA [press release](https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2019/11/americans-significant-stress). “While overall stress levels have not changed significantly over the past few years, the proportion of Americans who say they are experiencing stress about specific issues has risen over the past year,” the survey explains.

Among those surveyed, 56% of adults said the 2020 election is already a “significant stressor,” a year out from Election Day — an increase from the 52% who said the 2016 presidential election was stressful. (The election is proving to be a more stressful topic for survey respondents identifying as Democrats, versus those identifying as Republicans, by almost 25%.) This year’s survey also cites 69% of adults pointing to health care, specifically the costs thereof, as a notable point of stress. And 71% cited [mass shootings](https://time.com/5116457/kentucky-marshall-county-shooting-desensitization/) as stressful — the most common source of stress among those surveyed, with a rise of almost 10% from [the APA’s 2018 survey](https://time.com/5437646/gen-z-stress-report/).

Other stressful topics cited include [climate change](https://time.com/5669069/time-climate-change-issue/), immigration, national security and abortion. These topics presence as “hot-button” issues in the news cycle is likely not a coincidence, the APA found — of keeping up with the news cycle in 2019, 54% of those surveyed said they “want to stay informed,” but that the news is stressful. 39% of respondents said they have “taken steps over the past year to reduce their news consumption.”

The impact of discrimination was also deemed stressful by a majority of survey respondents identifying as part of a minority community. 63% of people of color surveyed said that discrimination has kept them from having a fully productive life. 64% of LGBT adults surveyed said the same thing.

Stress levels as a whole decreased drastically across respondents categorized by age group, the survey found. Members of the baby boomer generation and “older adults” were found to have to “significantly lower average stress levels” and their younger Gen X, Gen Z and millennial peers. (These stress levels were drawn on a scale of 1 to 10, with Gen X and younger all reporting stress levels above the median point, while boomers and older were below.)

“There is a lot of uncertainty in our world right now,” Arthur C. Evans Jr., APA’s chief executive officer, said in a statement accompanying the survey’s release. “While \[there\] are important societal issues that need to be addressed, the results also reinforce the need to have more open conversations about the impact of stress and stress management, especially with groups that are experiencing high levels of stress,” Evans said, according to the press statement.

“Research shows us that over time, prolonged feelings of anxiety and stress can affect our overall physical and mental health,” he noted, in correlation with findings that 59% of those surveyed felt they had not received enough emotional support to mitigate their stress levels.

According to the APA, the best ways to manage stress are to get a good amount of sleep every night, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy network of social support.

## Transcript

March 15th is going to make history, there's never been a global day of climate action where students all around the world are taking action for the same exact cause, a lot of these tracks are happening in Europe, Australia and Canada and the US even places in Uganda, Chile, Japan. Greta Thunberg is a 16- year- old climate activist. She decided to go strike in front of her local Swedish parliament in 2018. And from that, she sparked a global movement of students striking to put pressure on their world leaders to take climate action. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day, and then I want you to act.

I want you to act as if you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire. Because it is. [ NOISE ] There's 11 years until climate change becomes irreversible. That's what the IPCC report that came out last October said. Students realize that we need the action now and they can't wait till they're in positions of power because By then it'll be too late for my generation. An IPTC report said that we have until 2030. That kinda hit me hard because my little sister is suppose to graduate high school in 2030. We talk about people's futures but we when you know that somebody probably won't be able to have a decent climate and they're so close to you Last summer, was the worst, worst fire season for air quality in Colorado, especially since we've so much fracking pollution and car exhaust, so it hurt to breath.

And that was scary, it hurt to breath. Yes the youth We don't really have any legal power. We can't vote, we can't do anything. I can't even sign up to get a permit to have a rally without having my parents sign for it. So we strike. And we're trying to get you adults through attention. We're trying to get you to actually start acting. [ MUSIC ] I'm striking not just to say strike, but striking because climate change is bigger than any other thing that is going on in my life right now. I would say to all the big fossil fuel organizations, all of the countries that are not acting to solve this crisis, Can you please put aside your money and protect my future and protect future generations?

[ MUSIC ] What I hope to come out of this Youth Climate Strike, for my community in particular, is just some action or some acknowledgment of the climate crisis and of the young people growing up in the climate crisis. As of right now, the politicians in Alabama have been extremely silent on the issue of climate and global warming. And the things that they have said haven't been entirely true, entirely based on science. There will be more climate strikes. There will be more direct action taken by students all across the world. We will not be stopping. We are going to do really whatever it takes.

I have gotten some push back from social media, mostly adults who finds all these climate strikers threatening. It means that we're actually, our voices are getting heard by even those who don't wanna hear it. [ MUSIC ]
