9 Super Bowl Facts That Will Make You Sound Like an NFL Expert

2 minute read

Not into football? Feel like you’re always trying to figure out how the game works at a Super Bowl watch party when all you want to do is watch the ads, talk to your friends and eat homemade dip? Well, before the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers face off in Super Bowl 50, here are nine tidbits about the big game that can make you sound like an expert in no time. And they’ll probably even stump the most devoted football fans.

• The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls (6).

• The Denver Broncos have lost the most Super Bowls (5).

• According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the four currently active teams that have never been to the Super Bowl are: the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and Houston Texans.

• At 39, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will be the oldest starting quarterback in Super Bowl history. That record used to belong to a then 38-year-old John Elway (now a vice president of the team).

• The age difference between Manning and Panthers star Cam Newton (26) will be the biggest gap between starting quarterbacks in Super Bowl history: 13 years 48 days.

• The coldest Super Bowl bowl: Super Bowl VI (1972). It was 39ºF at the Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, La., where the Dallas Cowboys beat the Miami Dolphins.

• The Miami Dolphins set the record for the fewest points scored in a Super Bowl game (3) when they lost to the Dallas Cowboys, who scored 24 points.

• The San Francisco 49ers set the record for most points scored to win a Super Bowl and the largest margin of victory in a Super Bowl when they crushed the Broncos 55-10 during Super Bowl XXIV (1990) at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

• After the Broncos lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl XXI (1987), the game’s MVP, Giants quarterback Phil Simms, became known for starting the tradition of players saying “I’m going to Disney World” in an ad after winning a championship. “I was the MVP of the Super Bowl and had more people asking me about the Disney commercial than how I played the game,” he told USA Today.
