Cameron and Baerbock highlighted the difference between a sustainable ceasefire and an “immediate ceasefire,” which [has been widely called for elsewhere](https://time.com/6331688/protest-marches-us-gaza-war-ceasefire/). ”Let us be clear. We do not believe that calling right now for a general and immediate ceasefire, hoping it somehow becomes permanent, is the way forward,” they argued. U.S. President Joe Biden [warned ](https://apnews.com/article/biden-israel-hamas-oct-7-44c4229d4c1270d9cfa484b664a22071)on Dec. 12 that Israel was losing international support because of “indiscriminate bombing,” and on Dec. 14 [said](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-strikes-southern-gaza-faces-calls-reduce-civilian-toll-2023-12-14/) “I want them to be focused on how to save civilian lives, not stop going after Hamas, but be more careful.” The remarks have marked a shift in tone for the Biden administration, which previously said it was drawing [“no red lines” ](https://www.reuters.com/world/us-not-drawing-red-lines-israel-white-house-2023-10-27/)for Israel. The U.S. has not called for a ceasefire. In November, meanwhile, Biden wrote in an [op-ed for the _Washington Post_ ](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/11/18/joe-biden-gaza-hamas-putin/)that a two-state solution was the only way forward and said a re-envisioned Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, should rule Gaza as well. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu [told NBC’s _Meet the Press_ ](https://time.com/6334179/netanyahu-israel-hamas-war-tv-interview/)in November that he didn’t think the Palestinian Authority should run Gaza, and members of his government have spoken out against a two-state solution. In [an interview with Sky News](https://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/1735171388833464463?s=20), the Israeli ambassador to the U.K., Tzipi Hotovely, said “absolutely no,” when asked about whether Palestinians should be given a state.
