Curated by the TIME photo department, this list is semi-personal, compiled after asking each editor to think about the titles that felt the most poignant in a year indelibly shaped by isolation from COVID-19\. Many of the books address the movement for racial justice, examine economic inequality or lift underrepresented voices.
