New York-based photographer [Sinna Nasseri](https://www.instagram.com/strange.victory/?hl=en "undefined") has spent most of this year on a road trip across America documenting the fraught political landscape, West Coast wildfires and life amid COVID-19 lockdown. In Trump’s presidential race run on [conflicting words and](https://time.com/5897887/swing-states-2020-election/ "undefined") [disinformation](https://time.com/5897887/swing-states-2020-election/ "undefined"), photographs provide another layer of evidence to process—visual proof sliced out of the landscape that focuses your attention on particular moments, fractions of seconds. In Nasseri’s images, the confusion of 2020 is frozen using a flash, framing some of the most extreme points in the fight with the most fringe members of Trump’s base gasping in the final round. In the contest for what Biden has called “The Soul of America,” the former Vice President has tried to be clear about where he stands on race, saying he decided to enter the 2020 race when Trump failed to denounce white supremacists after the [Charlottesville violence in 2017](https://time.com/charlottesville-white-nationalist-rally-clashes/ "undefined"). Nasseri has captured these moments in a turbulent year when racial justice has been at the forefront of the news**,** since the [brutal murder of George Floyd](https://time.com/5907809/george-floyd-officers-trial/ "undefined"). These protest performances seem ready-made for cameras and social media, and hint at the darkness, danger and divisions.
