The heavily debated and much-maligned Suicide Squad remained in the No. 1 box office position, but fell steeply its second week as late-summer movie Sausage Party exceeded expectations and opened at $33.6 million, coming in at No. 2 on the charts.
Sausage Party, a raunchy R-rated animated movie starring Seth Rogen, gave Sony Pictures a much needed win in a summer with a dearth of original movies (most have been sequels or spinoffs).
Suicide Squad, which topped the box office charts with $43.8 million, and has made a generous $465.4 million worldwide, dipped by 67% in the charts, signaling that initial negative reviews may have added to the film’s reputation.
Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, the other big release this weekend, did well in reviews but was shaky at the box office, making $21.6 million.
