Let’s free-associate for a minute. If I say “autumn,” and you reply, “pumpkin spice latte,” good news: Your favorite fall beverage just got a health upgrade.

[Starbucks](http://www.starbucks.com/) and [Panera Bread](https://www.panerabread.com/) recently came out with announcements that they’re changing up their PSL recipes; both restaurants will now make them with real pumpkin. On top of that, Starbucks says they’ll omit [caramel coloring](https://www.yahoo.com/food/starbucks-and-panera-revamp-pumpkin-spice-lattes-126939211166.html), while Panera will serve drinks made “entirely without artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives or high-fructose corn syrup,” the _Associated Press_ [reports](http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/08/18/business/pumpkin-coffee-drinks-will-contain-pumpkin.html).

That’s certainly a plus, no matter which you prefer. But we decided to go one better and give you a pumpkin spice latte that you can enjoy any time of year—at home. Plus, when you make your own, you control the level of sweetness and spice and whether to use organic ingredients. Plug in that blender and get ready to sip your way to pumpkin perfection.

**Healthier Pumpkin Spice Latte**

Serves: 1

2 Tbsp. [canned pumpkin puree ](http://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Market-Pumpkin-Organic-3x15oz/dp/B0058PP61U/ref=as%5Fat?tag=healthcom04a-20&linkCode=as2&)½ tsp. pumpkin pie spice (or ¼ tsp. cinnamon and 1/8 tsp. each ground nutmeg and ground ginger)
 Pinch of salt
 1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk of choice (I use [homemade cashew milk](https://instagram.com/p/tT10WbH15H/?taken-by=cookiepie0402))
1 cup hot, strongly brewed coffee
1 to 2 tsp. raw honey (or more to taste, if desired)
1 Tbsp. unsalted grass-fed butter (such as [Kerrygold](http://www.amazon.com/Kerrygold-Pure-Irish-Butter-Unsalted/dp/B001LNPHNA/ref=as%5Fat?tag=healthcom04a-20&linkCode=as2&)) or coconut oil, optional

In a saucepan over medium-low heat, combine pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice and salt and cook, stirring, until warmed and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Whisk in vanilla and milk and cook, whisking, until warmed through, 1 to 2 minutes.

Transfer pumpkin mixture to a high-speed blender and add coffee, honey and butter, if desired. Blend until well mixed and frothy. Drink immediately.

[ MUSIC ] You're watching Everwell. Know more. Live better. [ MUSIC ] Yeah, I really enjoy Coffee and it's kind of, I kind of crave it every day. But I'm just a little bit concerned about those health risks that come along with it. Well I heard on the news that too much coffee is unhealthy. But then another news report said that it might actually have health benefits so I don't really know what to think. There's certainly lots of confusion over coffee. For years there have been warnings that it may lead to a host of health problems ranging from dehydration to cancer. But it turns out those fears, by and large, are groundless.

It's true that caffeine in coffee can raise your heart rate and increase blood pressure temporarily. But studies show coffee doesn not increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. In fact, it's been associated with a slightly lower risk. Ditto for type two diabetes and Parkinson's disease. According to studies, coffee drinkers are less likely to develop both compared to non drinkers. The research on cancer is reassuring as well. Coffee does not increase the risk. And is actually linked to lower odds of liver cancer. Overall, research shows java drinkers live just as long as those who have abstained and maybe even longer.

One possible reason for coffees apparent benefit, is that it's rich in anti oxidizes. But that does not make it a health drink. Higher amounts of coffee can cause jitters and stomach upset. And more than a cup or two a day has been linked to miscarriages in some research. Bottom line, coffee in moderation, up to a few cups a day, is likely fine for most people. But be careful about those fancy coffees with all the extra ingredients, which can add lots of extra calories. After all, you want that cup of Joe to perk you up. And I weigh you down. Helping you be a healthy skeptic, I'm Robert Davis.
