Texas Governor Greg Abbott is scheduled to provide an update on the killing of five police officers at the hands of a gunman in a Friday afternoon press conference.

The press conference caps a day of revelations about what transpired late Thursday night. A gunman apparently perched high above a peaceful protest over the treatment of African Americans in the criminal justice system opened fire on police because he “wanted to kill white people, especially white officers,” authorities said.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown praised his fellow officers and offered emotional words in a previous press conference.

“Our profession is hurting. Dallas officers are hurting. We are heartbroken,” he said. “There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. All I know is that this must stop, this divisiveness between our police and our citizens.”
