Following a meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto at the North American Leaders Summit, Obama expressed his condolences to the people of Turkey for the “terrible attack that took place in Istanbul.” During the morning flight to Ottawa, where the summit is being held, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the president had spoken to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and offered support. Obama later condemned the terrorists who carried out the attack, which reportedly consisted of three suicide bombers who first shot at citizens and then detonated explosive devices. Authorities have not yet deemed any one group responsible for the attack, though Turkey’s Prime Minister [suggested ISIS is responsible for the attacks.](http://time.com/4386799/istanbul-airport-terror-attack/?xid=homepage) Obama said the attack was an “indication of how little these vicious organizations have to offer beyond killing innocents.” “They’re continually losing ground, unable to govern those areas that they have taken over. They’re going to be defeated in Syria, they’re going to be defeated in Iraq,” Obama said of the terror network. “We will not rest until we have dismantled these networks of hate that have had an impact on the entire civilized world.” We stand with the people of Turkey,” the President added. ## Transcript [00:00] Let me just publicly expand my deepest [00:03] condolescences to the people of [00:07] Turkey. for the terrible attack [00:12] that took place in Istanbul. I had a chance to [00:16] speak to President Erdogan earlier today to [00:21] discuss with him. Not only how [00:26] heart broken we have been by the images of [00:30] the injured and those killed. But, also to reaffirm our [00:36] strong commitment to partner with Turkey, with Nato, [00:42] with The broad based alliance that we've [00:46] structure around the world to fight ISIS. It's [00:53] an indication of [00:56] how little these vicious organizations have to offer. [01:00] That beyond killing innocents, They are continually [01:03] losing ground, unable [01:10] to govern those areas that they've taken over, that [01:13] they're gonna be defeated in Syria, they're gonna be [01:17] defeated in Iraq.
