Winter is coming and it might bring snowstorm YOLO with it.
Once again The Weather Channel (TWC) has planned ahead and prepared for the worst that winter has to offer. They’ve unveiled 26 names for potential snowstorms that could ravage the States, cancel schools, and wreck holiday travel throughout the 2015-2016 season. When your flight gets cancelled blame winter storm YOLO, yes, YOLO, as in the acronym for “you only live once” as popularized by Drake. Other names on the list that you may find yourself cursing mid-winter are Kayla, Goliath, Ajax, Ursula, Lexi, Delphi, Quo, and Regis.
If the names sound simultaneously erudite and adolescent, it’s because the Bozeman High School Latin class, out of Montana, contributed to the 2015-2016 list. It’s a project they also worked on last year, when they provided winter storm names to the 2013-2014 list.
Back in 2013, TWC decided to start naming storms in order to put snowstorms on par with hurricanes, which are given official names by the The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). “It’s simply easier to communicate about a complex storm if it has a name, which our naming program has demonstrated,” said Bryan Norcross, who compiled the list of names for TWC. “Good communications benefits everyone.” Remember to communicate that while you’re cursing snowstorm Waylon by name during winter.
