When Ng announced he was leaving his role as chief scientist at Baidu, the Chinese tech company’s stock dropped 2.7%, an indication of his importance to its AI efforts. By that point, Ng was already a seasoned AI leader, having founded and led Google Brain. Currently, he’s the managing general partner at AI Fund, a venture studio that invests in AI companies, like Landing AI (Ng is founder and CEO) and Workera, the skills-intelligence platform.

Ng is also a co-founder of Coursera and the founder of DeepLearning.AI, both education companies. “As of now, about eight million people on the planet—one in 1,000 people on the planet—have taken an AI class from me,” Ng told Time last year. “The only way to build [AI applications] out is if we empower a lot of people all around the world to make use of these tools.”
