Mengestu is an Ethiopian American novelist, and is a 2012 MacArthur Fellow. He is recipient of a Lannan Literary Fellowship for Fiction, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Prize, Guardian First Book Award, and the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction.
