NBC coaxed its commentators out on a limb last week for a brave look at the year ahead. Opinions on the war, east and west, differed:
John W. Vandercook: “Great surprise of the year . . . will be a Russian attack upon Japan.”
Max Hill: “. . . Russia is not going to come in against Japan.”
Merrill Mueller: “Russia will join the Pacific war.”
Edwin Haaker: “I believe the defeat of Germany should be brought about sometime during April.”
David Anderson: “By Christmas 1945, Europe will have enjoyed three months of complete peace.”
W. W. Chaplin: “Germany will be officially defeated by June 7. Russia will declare war on Japan.”
