Married. Curtis Arnoux Peters (Peter Arno), 33, artist, onetime orchestra leader, onetime husband of Writer Lois (“Lipstick”) Long; and Mary Livingston (“Timmie”) Lansing, 21, Manhattan socialite; in Salisbury, Conn.

Maria Jeritza, 41, Austrian opera singer, longtime prima donna of the Metropolitan Opera Company, divorced wife of Baron Leopold von Popper de Podhragy of Hungary; and Winfield Richard (“Winnie”) Sheehan, 51, onetime New York World police reporter, long-time (1926-35) vice president of Fox Films in charge of production until his recent resignation (TIME,, July 29); in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Died. Charles Vilas Truax, 48, Representative-at-Large from Ohio since 1932, longtime hog-breeder, onetime editor of The Swine World; of a heart attack; in Washington, D. C.

Died. Leo Mielziner, 65, Manhattan portrait painter, father of Stage Designer Jo Mielziner and Cinemactor Kenneth MacKenna; after long illness; in Truro, Mass.

Died. Sir James Buchanan, Baron Woolavington, 85, longtime turfman, wealthy distiller (Buchanan whiskey); after long illness; in Petworth, England. Twice a Derby winner (1922-26), he never bet on a horse.

Died. “Dusty” Matthews, 86, retired fisherman, “friend of King Edward”; in Eastbourne, England. Seeing George V and Queen Mary strolling last spring, Fisherman Matthews pumped the monarch’s hand, said: “I’m pleased to meet you, Captain. I knew your mum and dad” (TIME, April 1).
