The Defense Department last week reported 2,424 more U.S. casualties in Korea, most of which occurred during the Chinese Communist breakthrough seven weeks ago. The new report, running well behind actual casualty figures, brought announced U.S. losses in 6½ months of war to 45,137 men and, since the Chinese attack, to 12,695 dead, wounded and missing. The breakdown:
DEAD 6,509
WOUNDED 29,951
MISSING 8,677
Total casualties by services: Army, 36,956; Marines, 7,332; Navy, 496; Air Force, 353.
