Men have been opposed for high office for many reasons, but it remained for the liberal New Republic magazine last week to find one of the most tortuous (and wrongheaded) of all. In arguing against the confirmation of John A. McCone, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, the NR said: “He is the kind of man who hates Communism not because it has betrayed the revolution, but because he assumes it is the revolution. That is a flaw beyond correction.”
