¶In Brooklyn, lanky (6 ft. 4 in.) Joe Adcock, 26, first baseman for the Milwaukee Braves, belted four homers and a double off four Dodger pitchers, paced his teammates to a 15-7 victory. Adcock also broke a major-league record by hitting for 18 bases in a single game, tied other major-league records: most homers in a single game (four), most homers in two successive games (five), and most extra-base hits in one game (five).
¶At St. Paul, Detroit Golf Pro Melvin (“Chick”) Harbert backed up his deadly approach shots with a deft touch on the greens and took the P.G.A. championship from Defender Walter Burkemo, 4 and 3.
¶In Vancouver, B.C., at the fifth British Empire Games, the highly favored Aussies got off to a slow start. Trinidad’s Mike Agostini (a student at Pennsylvania’s Villanova College) whipped Australia’s Hector Hogan (co-world-record holder) in the 100-yd. dash, tying the Games record with a 0:9.6 sprint.
¶At Southampton, N.Y., New Jersey’s Eddie Moylan eased past America’s top-ranking player, Tony Trabert, in the semifinals of the Meadow Club tournament, went on to beat Davis Cup Captain Billy Talbert in the finals. 6-0, 6-2, 6-4.
