The Press: Roof of Their Own

New York City, which has more newspapers and magazines than any otherU.S. city, has no press club where all newsmen gather. Instead, theymeet in such restaurants as Bleeck’s, Tim Costello’s, et al., but neverunder a roof of their own. Last week New York newsmen got ready fortheir own club. The Overseas Press Club, made up of present and pastforeign correspondents, took title to a handsome five-story building inmidtown Manhattan (39th Street east of Fifth Avenue), plans to open theclub next fall as a memorial to the 65 U.S. correspondents killed onduty since the beginning of World War II. O.P.C. expects to expand itsmembership to let in newsmen other than foreign correspondents, andmake the club’s facilities available to virtually all the press.
