FORTUNE sent Elmo Roper’s interviewers into Pennsylvania, the Keystone State, during the last week of September. Their findings:
¶ As of Oct. 1, 53.2% for Roosevelt.
¶ If, by Election Day, all those who now admit they are still considering a vote for Dewey should decide to give it to him, 51.1% for Dewey.
¶ Almost certain for Dewey, whatever happens between now and election, the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton hard-coal area (for Roosevelt in 1940).
¶ Almost certain for Roosevelt, the metropolitan areas of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
