The University of Pennsylvania (enrollment: 16,000) last week found a more substantial reward for good teachers than a pat on the back. To each of 20 faculty members, for excellence in undergraduate teaching, went a check for $1,000, reportedly the first such bonus bestowed by a U.S. college or university.
