Forever Amber was off to a lusty start. In the first week at Manhattan’s huge Roxy Theater, despite Legion of Decency disapproval, the hussy had grossed $180,589. Roxy Boss A. J. Balaban called it “unquestionably the greatest weekly figure ever compiled by any attraction in any theater anywhere.” The usual autumn boost was felt in box offices throughout the country. The leaders, according to Variety:

1 ) Foxes of Harrow ( 20th Century-Fox)

2) Unconquered (Paramount)

3) Forever Amber (20th Century-Fox)

4) Song of Love (MGM)

5) Dark Passage (Warner).
