HEROES: First in Peace

To his other honors, Elder Statesman Cordell Hull could now add the Nobel Peace Prize for 1945.* Explained the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, which announced its first peace award since 1938, in Oslo this week: Hull, the eighth American to be so tapped, had done most to lay the foundations for the San Francisco Conference.

While it was about it, the committee also picked a 1944 winner: the International Committee of the Red Cross. Reason: Red Cross work among prisoners of war.

*Including a cash award of approximately $30,000.
