Fortnight ago the Turkish Consul-General at New York told the Merchants’Association that his country was “desirous to come in touch with societies interested in hogs.” Because pig-flesh is forbidden food to Moslems, he explained, Turkey is becoming overrun with wild swine. Perhaps some U. S. concern would like the concession for de-pigging Turkey.
The Merchants’ Association told the press. The press told the story. Last week the Merchants’ Association received a letter from one Frederick Paul, farmer, of Stemmers, Md. Wrote he: “We saw a piece in the Baltimore News saying the Turkish Government is asking your association to help them get rid of wild hogs infesting the country. So my father and I have proposed to undertake such a task. Get in touch with us. . . . P.S. We are individual, just father and son. We also will clean up the hogs in six weeks. My father is social, but when wild hogs go fooling around him he knows how to kill them. Our weapons are shotguns. His motto is ‘Be Prepared.’ I hope we can clean up the hogs for the Turks.”
