if Tokyo’s delicately landscaped Kasumigaseki (Sea Mist) golf course, with its 200-year-old pine trees, its wiry Korai-grass greens, and its slight but well-stacked female caddies, was too much for the occidental stars competing for the Canada Cup. While U.S. Tourists Sam (“Mr. Sneado”) Snead and Jimmy Demaret paced the visitors with a respectable 72-hole total of 566, pudgy Torakichi Nakamura teamed up with Manchurian-born Koichi Ono to score an incredible 557. Said an observer of the Japanese: “I never saw such putting in my life.” Said Mr. Sneado: “I never saw better caddies either.”

¶ College football ran true to form for a change, but some of the best teams had a tough time saving the oddsmakers’ scalps. Fired-up Colorado led all the way into the final quarter before Oklahoma managed to salvage a 4 5-game unbeaten string, 14-13. Fist fights flared, and smooth football seemed a forgotten art until Notre Dame completed a soaring 74-yd. touchdown pass to trip Pitt, 13-7. Ohio State’s Rose Bowl express just managed to stay on schedule when the Buckeyes booted a third-period field goal to stop Wisconsin, 16-13. Army’s Dave Bourland waited until the final minutes before he found the range and fired two passes that topped Virginia, 20-12.

¶ “He’s a big green clown,” said Owner Arthur (“Bull”) Hancock Jr. of his leggy bay colt Nadir as he got up the final $1,000 of the $2,385 entry fee that gave him the privilege of watching Nadir horse around in the $277,150 Garden State Stakes, richest race in the world. To make the picture complete, Nadir had something of a cutup in the saddle too: rough-riding Willie Hartack, who bounces in the irons like a novice riding for his life. But both clowns kept their minds on their work: Nadir finished an easy two lengths in front of R. D. Prewitt’s Terra Firma, and Willie set a new record with his 41st stakes victory of the year. Cash to Hancock: $157,432.50.
