A lot of the speeches printed in the Congressional Record never get madeon the floor of Congress; they are merely so-called “extension ofremarks” by lawmakers seized with a second thought, a desire to foolsome of the voters, or a fit of after-hours loquacity. The system hasmany faults, but at least it spared Congressmen from listening toMississippi’s ranting Dixie Demagogue John Rankin, who filled 13columns of the Congressional Record one day this month with a debasedattack on FEPC. Sample quote:
“These individuals who prate about slavery do not hesitate to join inthis communistic movement to enslave the white people of America . . .You have an illustration now. Our Yiddish Solicitor General has takenit upon himself to go into the Supreme Court and misrepresent theAmerican people. . . by . . . trying to wipe out all segregation . . .This is a part of the communistic program, laid down by Stalinapproximately 30 years ago. Remember communism is Yiddish. I understandthat every member of the Politburo around Stalin is either Yiddish ormarried to one, and that includes Stalin himself.”
