Education: Charter for Children

Many a U.S. schoolroom has a framed copy of the Constitution on the wall. This week New York City’s 850,000 children, returning to classes, found something else there—a copy of the San Francisco Charter. For those old enough to understand it, the Charter will also be a text for study. For those too young, School Superintendent John E. Wade hopes the framed Charter will become, like the Constitution, something to look up to.

Said he: “We know that the men who administer the Charter must have character, must believe in the universal brotherhood of man. We want our children to realize that without that [character and faith], they cannot succeed at anything they try.”
