In his brief visit to the U.S., Britain’s Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery (see INTERNATIONAL) got his first whiff of the ubiquitous U.S. columnists. As Montgomery sailed from Manhattan last week, ship newsmen asked him about Columnist Drew Pearson’s story on Monty’s conferences with U.S. Chief of Staff Omar Bradley and others. Pearson reported that Monty had urged Bradley to rearm Germany. Up went Monty’s eyebrows. “What in the world is a columnist?” he asked in bewilderment. “How did he know that? … I didn’t know this chap was in the room.
