The Chicago Journal of Commerce, bible of Midwestern businessmen, last week devoted six columns to publishing the list of 564 “Communist fronts” compiled by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. From now on, the Journal announced in a front-page editorial, it would not mention any group on the list without a parenthetical warning that it had been “cited as a Communist-front organization by Government agencies.” Explained Editor John Ames: “Some businessmen are such saps. They get to rooting for all kinds of things, and then they get to contributing, and before you know it they’re on the board.”
