Foreign News: Good Fresh Herring

What’s to be done with the record herring catch? The sleek “silver darlings” that shoal in the seas around Scotland are still sold by the traditional maze (630 fish), last (13,200 fish), or the cran (37½ gallons). But three-quarters of Britain’s former herring market now lies in the tight Russian economic orbit of Eastern Europe.

Last week experts suggested solutions for disposing of surplus herring hauls. By the maze, the last and the cran, they will be squeezed into oil for mixing into paints, ground into cowmeal for conversion into milk.
