A grey-haired old man slipped unnoticed into St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. A centuries-old ceremony, the service to confirm the election of Dr. Geoffrey Francis Fisher as Archbishop of Canterbury (TIME, Jan. 15), was under way.
Suddenly the old man jumped up, pitched his high voice to a querulous note: “I would like to say that this appointment does not meet with Heaven’s approval. I told the Prime Minister that God cannot and will not approve of the preferment of those who believe merely in policies of compromise. . . . So I would urge you solemnly and seriously to think twice before proceeding with this matter. . . .”
The eight participating bishops listened in silence, then proceeded with the ceremony.
