> Photographers and reporters were allowed aboard the British aircraft carrier Illustrious, undergoing repairs at an “undisclosed” U.S. Navy Yard (TIME, Sept 1) to see her new commander Captain Lord Louis Mountbatten review his men. And they were finally allowed to state the place where she was docked: Norfolk, Va.

> The Army & Navy Journal complained in an editorial that the Navy would not allow it to publish the names of the officers and enlisted men who won this year’s Navy awards for engineering and gunnery. It was allowed to print only the names of the winning ships—which in its opinion “was of far more interest to the enemy.”
