On the Scoreboard it looked good: it was 14-14, going into the last quarter. But New York’s pro football Giants just didn’t have a backfield to their name:
¶ Fullback Bill Paschal was out with a week-old broken jaw.
¶ Fullback Merle Hapes was ruled out of the game while cops investigated a Broadway gambler. The gambler had tried to bribe Hapes and a fellow Giant to throw the game for $7,000.
¶ Halfback Frank Reagan was manhandled so badly by Chicago’s bruising Bears that he was rushed to the hospital at halftime, with a fractured nose.
¶ Halfback George Franck also got sent to the hospital—banged-up shoulder.
¶ Halfback Frank Filchock played almost the entire game with a broken nose. In the final quarter, the weary Giants collapsed. The Bear’s great passer Sid Luckman, who had not carried the ball all year, decided to run with it. He plunged up the middle, brushed aside two Giants, went 19 yards for the deciding touchdown. A few minutes later, the Bears cinched the championship with a field goal. Score: Bears 24, Giants 14.
