National Affairs: Raise for the Executives

While on the subject of wages, Harry Truman took occasion to urge upon Congress a pay raise which many students of government have long recommended: he asked the Congress to give top-drawer U.S. officials about $10,000 a year more. Sample increases under the President’s plan: members of Congress, from $10,000 to $20,000; cabinet members, from $15,000 to $25,000; Supreme Court Justices, from $20,000 to $30,000; agency heads, from $10-12,000 to $17-20,000. The President said nothing about his own $75,000-a-year salary.
