PLAIN PEOPLE: Mark the Words

At Singen, in occupied Germany, a 52-year-old Nazi veteran named Karl Winterer listened impassively while scores of other German political prisoners swore that they had never been Nazis, that they feared the Russians and loved the Americans. Finally he cornered a U.S. correspondent and said:

“You Americans are children. You believe everything. . . . We have been educated to tell you these things. . . . And remember this, American. The French will hate us. The Russians will use us. The British will ignore us. And the Americans will help us. Mark my words.”
