Auction haunters, bargain hunters, householdhandymen are just waiting for the day when the war ends and Army supplies, tools, trucks—maybe even airplanes—will be for sale. For citizens who can get priorities to buy, the day is already here.
The Army Air Forces is selling off equipment and parts, has even issued a mouthwatering, 32-page catalogue of their stock. Reason for the sale:the items are outmoded or surplus. Air-minded citizens cannot yet buy airplanes, but they can buy assorted airplane seats, miscellaneous airplane wheels, electrically heated flying suits, fleece-lined boots or a Bendix Scintilla Vacuum Sealed Condenser.
Ordinary, earth-bound citizens can find: gasoline-electric generators, rubber hose, portable air compressors, tube bending tables, electric concrete drills, assorted hammers, miter boxes, saws, marlin spikes, drills and bits, wrenches, pliers, nippers, turpentine, castor oil, hinges, screws, nuts, bolts, washers (“Just What You’ve Been Waiting For!”)—even typewriter ribbons and photograph albums. All goods are sold on the basis of bids.
Only a small part of the stock is listed in the catalogue. Would-be customers can see the rest at the A.A.F. Specialized Depot in Memphis, Tenn. The depot expects to have even a bigger variety of stock as time goes on, may end up with a mailorder business bigger than Sears, Roebuck.
