World Battlefronts, THE WEEK: A Dent, a Stab, a Blow

Italy. Allied armies struck at opposite hinges of the German line, dented but did not crack the enemy barriers before Rome.

Pacific. In the Marshalls—perhaps the next objective in the Central Pacific—Army bombers and carrier-based Navy bombers struck in much the same pattern of attack which preceded the landings in the Gilberts.

Russia. Mud and the Wehrmacht held the Russians.

Germans. Berlin got 1,500 more tons from the R.A.F., Berliners fled by the thousands.
