A pitcher at bat is usually considered such a fish out of water that he is expected to foul, ground or strike out.
Last week 29-year-old Jim Tobin of the Boston Braves, pitching against the Chicago Cubs, won his own game (6-to-5) with three home runs in three trips to the plate—a feat unequaled by any pitcher in major-league history. It was Tobin’s fourth homer in five at-bats.
