The Selective Service System had disquieting news to report last week about the health of the nation. Last spring SSS had reported that 40% of the men examined for the draft had been rejected for physical defects. Last week’s report, the result of a more thorough survey, upped the percentage of rejections to 50%. One man in every two had to be turned down for such causes as bad teeth (20.9%), substandard eyes (13.7%), heart and circulatory troubles (10.6%), venereal diseases (6.3%). The President took note, hinted that the Civilian Conservation Corps might undertake a program to put U.S. young men back on healthier feet.
